I offer this letter as an introduction to a lovely young woman I had the pleasure to meet some months ago. Amy is a friend of my daughter and recently spent a few weeks in our home over a summer break. Coincidentally, I was involved in our annual community fundraiser, and this dear girl volunteered to perform as part of our program. Khmer classical dance is dance form from Cambodia known by various names in English, such as Khmer royal ballet and Cambodian court dance. One cannot witness classical Cambodian dance without praising the beauty, skill and precision of the performers.

Khmer classical dance is a highly stylized art form performed mainly by women in front of royal palace courts. Most Khmer dance performances consist of four main character types. They are Neay Rong (men), Neang (maidens), Yeak (ogres or yaksha) and Sva (monkeys). Other roles include deer, mermaids, hermits and the mythical Garuda and Kinnaris. Most of these characters (men included) are performed primarily by women. Monkey roles, however are performed by men because the role usually includes acrobatics such as cartwheels. Hermit characters are also usually danced by male performers.

On 19th December, 2009 Uttar Ke Puttar is eliminated from semi-final round of Dance Premier League on Sony Entertainment Television. In the semi-final round of DPL – Uttar Ke Puttar, Western Yodha, Southern Sizzlers and Central Surmas had participated.

The semi-final round begins from 18th December on Sony and finally the result comes in light with the performance of 19th December, 2009. Priyanka Chopra and Uday Chopra also have participated in the Show to promote their upcoming Hindi movie – Pyaar Impossible.

This Saturday, Dance Premier League had brought the biggest fun with the biggest dancing competition. In the first round of semi-final, Western Yodha was leading team.

Second round of semi-final begins with Prachi Bhosle’s dance. She had participated from Central Surmas. Taraak performed second solo dance from Southern Sizzlers. Uttar Ke Puttar team also introduced Sahaj Singh for Solo dance.

Final dance was Jugalbandi in Dance Premier League on Sony. Santosh and Kartik performed from Western Yodha in Jugalbandi dance. Team of Prachi and Ankita was opposite in this Jugalbandi performance.

In the semi-final round of Dance Premier League on Sony Entertainment Television, Kartik and Prachi were awarded as Man of the Match by DPL Ki Rani.

Finally, result of semi-final round was declared by the Show host, Husayn ibn Ali. The score was already locked by judges and DPL Ki Rani for each team.

Western Yodha team of DPL was declared as the first finalist team with 82 points. Central Surma was the second finalist team of Dance Premier League with 68 points. Southern Sizzlers was the third team in this lists.

Finally, Uttar Ke Putter is eliminated from the semi-final round of Dance Premiere League on Sony TV. In this episode, Prachi gets a lucky stone by Priyanka Chopra for the best performance.

Finalist teams of DPL on Sony TV are – Western Yodha, Central Surmas and Southern Sizzlers. Next week is the grand finale of Dance Premier League on Sony Entertainment Television. These finalist teams have to perform the best dance in the grand finale to win the championship of DPL. Only one team will be declared champion of the DPL on Sony TV.

Samba Background:

Samba is a lively dance style, which originated from Brazil in late 19th century. It actually involves a set of dances, rather than a single dance, so no dance can be comparable with the original Brazilian Samba dance style. Samba Pagode:

Pagoda originally means a celebration with lots of food, music and dance, and so, this style of Samba was originated in 1980s.

Samba Axe:

It is a very energetic style of Samba dance, which is usually performed as a solo dance. This style of Samba is based on proper choreographic movements.

Samba Reggae:

It is a second most popular Samba style dance in Brazil, mixed with reggae beats and drums.

Samba Rock:

It is a type of night club dance, with a mix variety of other Samba styles.

Samba de roda:

It is a traditional Brazilian dance, accompanied by singing and clapping.

Basic Dance Steps and Timing:

There are several movements in Samba, but the two movements are the basic ones-the Forward Basic Movement, and the Backward Basic Movement.

Combining these two basic steps, make the six steps of the first move-the Forward Basic step. If the man will move his left foot forward, then the woman will move her right foot backward and vise versa. In the Forward Basic Move, the man will perform Forward Basic Movement, followed by backward movement, and the woman will do the opposite. Let us make ourselves understand about these two basic steps.

Back Basic Movement:

Right, Place. Step slightly back, on the first beat of music. Toe first, slide right foot back and change weight on the right leg, not moving left leg.

Left, tap. Up and down. Move left foot back, tapping on inside ball of the foot, with up and down motions.

Forward Basic Movement:

This is the same pattern as above except for the change side that is, Left side to start with, repeating the above pattern.

Back spot movement:

This is similar to the basic movements except, for the forward or back, the tap occurs behind the foot that moves on the first beat.

So, all you have to learn is these two basic steps and you will master samba dance.
